De-Commissioning of Tattoos

De-Commissioning of Tattoos

It is auspicious for the person(s) requesting this prayer, to make use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation before this is done.

The efficacy of this Sacramental is often viewed as a “brave” step in taking back ownership of one’s body and “edit” one’s life story.  This process of removing or spiritually neutralizing a tattoo, is often driven by personal, professional, or spiritual reasons. Reasons range from changing tastes and regrets to a desire for spiritual cleansing.  Here are some further points as to why one should consider this spiritual option in their lives.

Spiritual and Religious Reasons

  • Deliverance from Occult/Spiritual Danger: Some spiritual advisors, particularly within certain Catholic traditions, suggest that tattoos can act as “demonic portals” or “diabolical seals,” requiring special prayers to break the spiritual connection.
  • Removal of Cursed or Improper Imagery: Tattoos, even religious ones like St. Michael, are sometimes viewed by exorcists as a form of “mutilation” or improper use of holy imagery, requiring a “decommissioning prayer” to sever these links.
  • Repentance and Reconversion: Individuals converting to faiths like Orthodox Christianity may remove tattoos to conform to traditional prohibitions against marking the body.

Personal and Life-Stage Changes

  • Regret and Outdated Tastes: Tattoos obtained when young may no longer reflect a person’s current identity, values, or aesthetic preferences.
  • Relationship Breakups: Removing tattoos of an ex-partner’s name or matching tattoos is a common reason for removing a permanent reminder of a past relationship.
  • Significant Life Changes: Starting a family or entering a new phase of life may create a desire to remove tattoos considered embarrassing or unsuitable for the new lifestyle.
  • Making Room for New Art: Many people remove old, faded, or disliked tattoos to create a fresh, clean canvas for better-quality art.

Professional and Social Considerations

  • Job Requirements and Professionalism: Despite growing acceptance, visible tattoos can hinder employment in industries like finance, law, healthcare, or corporate roles, prompting removal to secure better job opportunities.
  • Elimination of Stigma: Some, particularly those with tattoos in highly visible areas (neck, face, hands), seek to remove them to avoid negative social perceptions.

Health and Aesthetic Reasons

  • Poor Quality or Fading: Poorly executed, misspelled, or aged tattoos that have become blobs of color are frequently removed or lightened for a cover-up.
  • Skin Irritation and Safety: Tattoos can cause long-term skin conditions, such as chronic inflammation or allergic reactions, prompting removal for health reasons.
  • Immune System Concerns: Research suggests tattoo ink can accumulate in lymph nodes, leading to long-term inflammation, which may drive some to remove them to improve overall health.

(The Priest – wearing a purple stole, begins…
denotes the sign of the cross)

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

In the Holy Name of Jesus, with the authority of my priesthood, through the authority granted to me by Jesus Christ and His Church, through the merits of the Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension of our Lord Jesus and His sending of the Holy Spirit, I invoke the keys of St. Peter and I de-commission this tattoo and break and sever each and every connection between this tattoo and the Evil One and his associates. I exorcise this image and the ink used to make this tattoo and sever each and every connection between this image and ink, and every demon who may have attached themselves to this body as a result of the tattoo. I nullify each and every claim or rights demons may assert to this body and person due to any magical images, symbols or scripts incorporated into the tattoo. And through this holy anointing. I consecrate this person and their body to our Lord Jesus Christ through the hands of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and by the sign of His Holy Cross. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

(if prudent, trace the sign of the cross over the tattoo with exorcised oil).
